Nush has relaunched its almond milk-based yogurt range with a brand-new, higher-protein recipe.

The protein content of each yogurt pot ranges from 16g to 23g per 350g. All are free from both dairy and soy, and are suitable for vegans. The yogurts come in six flavors: strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, vanilla fudge (a brand-new addition), and natural.

The natural flavor packs the highest protein content, while raspberry contains the lowest. All yogurt pots are now available to buy from Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Ocado, Marks & Spencer, Planet Organic, Whole Foods Market, and select independent health stores. They are priced at £3.25 for a 350g pot and £1.90 for a 120g pot.

The UK’s ‘first-ever’ high-protein, soy-free yogurt?

Nush foudner Bethany Eaton
Nush Former police officer Bethany Eaton founded Nush in 2016

Nush Foods is a UK-based dairy-free brand founded in 2016 by former London police officers Bethany and Paul Eaton. Motivated by Bethany’s personal health journey and her background in nutrition, the couple set out to create a plant-based yogurt alternative that matched the taste and texture of traditional dairy products. They began by crafting almond milk yogurts in their kitchen, eventually launching Nush as the UK’s first producer of nut milk yogurts.

The new range is believed to be the first high-protein, soy-free vegan yogurt available in the UK. The products are said to be creamier, tastier, and more nutritious than previous versions.

Tiba Tempeh, which was named the fastest-growing meat-free brand earlier this year, has just announced the launch of a new Smoky Tempeh Block.

The block is infused with a smoky marinade and can be used in a variety of dishes, including stir-fries, sandwiches, and pastas. It will be available on Ocado from April 18 and in Waitrose and Sainsbury’s at the end of the month. The 220g product, which retails at £3.00, is a new addition to Tiba Tempeh’s growing plant-based range, which also includes an Original Block and Sweet Chilli Pieces.

“We’re so excited to launch our new Smoky Tempeh as a natural extension to our best-selling Original Block,” said Alexandra Longton, cofounder of Tiba Tempeh, in a statement. “We’ve crafted the tastiest protein-packed tempeh,
which we know consumers will love. We think this is the tastiest tempeh on the market, and we can’t wait for people to try it.”

The product launch coincides with increased retail distribution for the brand. From April 30, Waitrose will carry three of Tiba Tempeh’s products – Original Block, Sweet Chilli Pieces, and Smoky Block – in over 200 stores for the first time. The brand will appear under Waitrose’s “BrandsNew” platform, which highlights emerging brands in the food space. “We are delighted to be working with Waitrose to bring more naturally delicious and nutritious plant-based options to even more consumers,” Longton said.

Tiba Tempeh is currently the UK’s largest tempeh-only brand and has seen rapid growth despite a downturn in the overall meat-free category. The brand reports a 736 percent year-on-year increase in retail sales value, representing a £1.2 million (USD $1.5 million) rise over the past year. Longton attributes the growth to increasing consumer demand for minimally processed alternatives to conventional meat substitutes.

Fresh lion’s mane mushrooms have officially launched in UK supermarkets, with packs available to buy in large Sainsbury’s stores now.

Kent-based brand Urban Farm-It secured the listing for its 200g punnets of fluffy white individual mushrooms. They cost £5 a pack, and the punnet is fully recyclable.

“Bringing this unique ingredient to consumers across the country is a huge milestone for us,” said Urban Farm-It founder Elliot Webb in a statement. “Lion’s mane is gaining recognition for its versatility in plant-based cooking, with its meaty texture making it an excellent alternative to seafood and meat.”

Lion’s mane mushrooms are still a relatively niche product in the UK, but they are growing in popularity due to their versatility and apparent links to improved brain health. A growing body of research indicates that they may support cognitive function by promoting nerve growth, which helps protect and regenerate brain cells. Some studies indicate they could aid memory, focus, and even reduce symptoms of mild cognitive impairment.

In addition to their possible health benefits, they are a popular ingredient in vegan cooking due to their meaty texture and ability to absorb flavors. They can be made into convincing meat alternatives, and are particularly known for being transformed into realistic plant-based steaks, a recipe made popular by plant-based chef Derek Sarno.

Better Nature has announced a “new and improved” tempeh recipe with added protein.

According to the UK-based brand, its organic tempeh now includes 44g of protein per 200g pack, which is the equivalent of six eggs, or 1 and ⅓ chicken breasts. Better Nature noted that the new recipe also means that its tempeh absorbs flavors better and has a juicier texture.

While the new tempeh is comparable to chicken in terms of protein, it also includes gut-friendly fiber and prebiotics. Better Nature launched in 2020, and co-founder and co-CEO Elin Roberts has said that the company aims to target flexitarians and meat-eaters with tempeh.

“For us as a brand, purely being plant-based no longer sells. It’s not drawing in the masses. Instead, we’re tapping into the growing number of meat-eaters who are looking for healthier ways to pack in the protein,” explained Roberts. She added that customers can flavor and cook Better Nature’s tempeh just like chicken. It also has a shelf life that’s seven times longer.

Recent research by The Vegan Society found that there is an increasing shift towards plant-based eating in the UK, while the Good Food Institute indicates that plant-based milk and meat, in particular, are now mainstream staples throughout the UK and Europe.

Around 23 percent of UK consumers follow some kind of “meat reduction diet,” and 16 percent describe themselves as “flexitarian.” Furthermore, 58 percent of the population has attempted meat reduction, and a significant 40 percent regularly use dairy alternatives.

Better Nature is the UK’s leading tempeh brand and was named the second fastest-growing meat-free brand of 2024 after Juicy Marbles. The brand has said that it aims to promote health by making whole food proteins the norm, not simply an alternative to animal products.

Better Nature’s “New & Improved Organic Tempeh” is available now from Tesco, Asda, and Ocado, with an RRP of £2.70 per 200g pack.

Juicy Marbles has introduced Pork-ish, which is thought to be the first whole-cut plant-based pork on the market.

The 6.4oz cut, which is part of the brand’s Meaty Meat range, launched on March 11, 2025, priced at USD $10 per pack. The company says Pork-ish is 26 percent cheaper per ounce than its most affordable existing product.

The new release follows the success of Meaty Meat: Lamb-ish, which sold out within 24 hours in the US. Juicy Marbles aims to make plant-based whole cuts a kitchen staple, and Pork-Ish can be sliced, shredded, or cooked whole, with a seven-minute cook time.

Co-founder Luka Sinček explained that Meaty Meat was deliberately designed with an undefined shape, rather than mimicking traditional meat cuts, to encourage greater versatility in the kitchen. “We wanted to give our customers more freedom while shifting the perception of plant-based whole cuts in general,” he said in a statement. “By focusing only on what people love most about Marbles: meaty texture and flavor, and nothing else – we hope we can give people permission to experiment with whole cuts in all kinds of recipes.”

Marble 3.0

Juicy Marbles Pork-Ish is highly versatile and can be used in a variety of recipes

Juicy Marbles has also developed a new clean-label formula called Marble 3.0, which is used in Pork-ish. The company says it created the formula to address concerns over plant-based meats lacking essential nutrients.

According to co-founder and R&D chief Maj Hrovat, the new formula improves the nutritional profile of plant-based meat while keeping the ingredient list simple. Pork-ish contains nine ingredients, with 20 grams of protein per 100 grams, a complete amino acid profile, and key micronutrients such as iron, zinc, selenium, and B vitamins, including B12. It is free from preservatives, thickeners, and binders.

Pork-ish is now available for purchase in the US and Canada. In the US, it can be bought directly from Juicy Marbles’ website, while Canadian customers can purchase it through Vegan Supply. The company has not yet announced release dates for the EU, UK, or US retail stores.

Heura Foods has announced the launch of a new flavor of its hugely popular Chunks, named “Tex-Mex.”

The product is the brand’s first designed specifically for Mexican cuisine. According to Heura, demand for Mexican food has increased by 30 percent since 2019, making it the third most in-demand cuisine (after Italian and Thai) in Spain.

As well as being 100 percent plant-based, the Tex-Mex Chunks contain around 27 percent of recommended daily protein per serving. They are also additive-free, high in fiber, and fortified with vitamin B12. They are the third Chunks product from Heura, alongside Original and Mediterranean flavors.

“At Heura, we continue to push for foods with a greater impact on our health and the planet, so we can enjoy every day,” said Marc Coloma, CEO and co-founder of Heura Foods, in a statement. “Our Chunks, which are the best-selling product in the category, together with the growing trend of Mexican cuisine, have led us to create an alternative that responds to what consumers want: nutrition, sustainability, and a delicious experience.”

What is Heura Foods?

Established in Barcelona, Spain, in 2017, Heura Foods is quickly establishing itself as a key player in the alternative protein category. It offers plant-based alternatives to beef burgers, ham slices, and other meat products.

The company uses high-moisture extrusion technology to replicate the fibrous texture of real meat while keeping ingredients plant-based and nutritious.

Plant-based meat is increasingly under fire for being ultra-processed. While studies have indicated that processed vegan alternatives are considerably healthier than meat, many brands are seeking to distance themselves from this label.

Earlier this year, Heura announced that it plans to “transform the ultra-processed category” with its new food technology. It’s set to register six new patents this year, which will focus on “unprecedented impact and nutritional density” in food categories beyond plant-based meat. These will include pasta, snacks, and vegan cheeses.

The patents will be focused on removing saturated fats, starches, and additives from these foods, replacing them with healthy lipids and plant proteins.

Magnum has announced a shake-up of its vegan ice cream recipe in the UK, with soy now being used in place of pea protein.

All three flavors – Magnum Vegan Classic, Magnum Vegan Almond, and Magnum Blueberry Cookie – will now be soy-based, with Magnum describing the new recipe as “its most velvety vegan ice cream yet.”

“This new soy-based recipe not only delivers an exceptional taste experience but also presents a significant opportunity for retailers to help drive incremental ice cream sales,” said Daniel Lythgo, Brand Manager, Magnum UK, Unilever, in a statement. “We constantly test and evolve our products to bring shoppers the most indulgent ice cream experiences. This is no different for our vegan range, and testing with consumers found that they really enjoyed our new velvety vegan ice cream recipe and the flavors on offer.”

Magnum first launched dairy-free ice cream in 2018, with the Classic and Almond flavors initially launching in Finland and Sweden. Since then, they have expanded into several countries in Europe and the US.

According to Magnum, its vegan ice cream portfolio has seen significant growth, increasing by 75 percent over the last year. Most of this growth is attributed to the Blueberry Cookie flavor, which launched in February 2024.

Magnum says that its new soy-based recipe offers improved taste and texture, better positioning it to drive sales “beyond the traditional Veganuary spike.” Sales will also be aided, according to the brand, by its “eye-catching” new packaging that will increase visibility on the shelf.

The new Magnum packs have an RRP of £4.25 each for a pack of three. Magnum Almond is also available as a single stick for £2.30.

There is huge demand for vegan snacks across the UK, coinciding with the rising number of vegans, flexitarians, and those who avoid dairy for health reasons.

The UK vegan snack market was valued at USD $2.1 million in 2021, and it’s been forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8 percent this decade, reaching $3.8 million in 2030.

There are a number of other all-vegan brands that stock protein bars, including Vive and Vivo. Other mainstream brands, like MyProtein and Barebells, also stock plant-based versions of their non-vegan products.

UK retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) has launched a new and improved range of vegan products under its brand Plant Kitchen.

The release of two new products and 10 other “upgraded” dishes comes several months after M&S first announced it was working on a “big project” regarding Plant Kitchen. Other changes include new packaging and new positions in store.

The two new items now on the shelves are Plant Kitchen Smoky Veggie Sausages and Plant Kitchen Garlic & Not’zerella Flatbread. These are in addition to five new lines that were unveiled in September 2024. Among the 10 “improved” products are a Green Thai Vegan Curry with Sticky Rice, a Vegetable and Lentil Lasagne, and Mushroom Steak Burgers.

‘More natural ingredients’

M&S The new Smoky Veggie Sausages are made with carrots and other vegetables

Both the new products and the upgraded ones have been formulated using “more natural ingredients,” according to M&S. This means “more veg and store cupboard ingredients are packed in the meals.”

The Plant Kitchen Smoky Veggie Sausages, for example, are made with carrots, red pepper, smoked paprika and roasted garlic. They are high in fiber and protein, and are fortified with iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. Many people want “to get more plants into their diets,” said M&S in a statement, explaining the recipe changes. The move towards healthier plant-based alternatives is something other vegan brands have embraced lately, including Beyond Meat and Heura.

The packaging of some of the new Plant Kitchen range has changed to make the branding less prominent, with just a small Plant Kitchen logo in the corner. Instead of having their own section in M&S Food stores, the products are now positioned next to their animal-based counterparts.

Oato, a fresh oat milk brand known for its cow’s milk-style packaging, is now available to buy in Sainsbury’s stores in the UK.

The milk will be available in liter and pint carton sizes. It will be placed in the chilled aisle at 375 stores across the country. Oato is somewhat unique in the British dairy-free category as it makes fresh, non-UHT milk. It’s also made in the UK and uses British oats.

“We are so thrilled to partner with Sainsbury’s to become the first fresh oat milk available in their stores,” said Oato founder Carl Hopwood in a statement. “It is yet another significant milestone for Oato as a business, as we continue to make headway in becoming the leading dairy alternative brand in the UK. Locally sourced, convenience, and affordability matter to UK consumers, so to be one of the few that have those USPs within the dairy alternative category while also being fresh and not UHT raises the bar.”

When Does Vegan Nutella Come to the UK and USA? https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/vegan-nutella-uk-usa/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/food/vegan-nutella-uk-usa/#respond Sun, 26 Jan 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=346257 Here’s what we know about if and when Nutella Plant-Based will become more widely available

This article was written by Polly Foreman on the PBN Website.

]]>
Last year, it was finally announced that vegan Nutella would soon be hitting supermarket shelves. Nutella Plant-Based, a dairy-free version of the beloved hazelnut spread, is now available in select European countries. But when will it come to the UK and USA? Here’s what we know.

What is Nutella and why is it so popular?

Nutella, launched in 1964 by Italian company Ferrero, is one of the world’s most iconic spreads. Its origins date back to World War II when cocoa was scarce, and hazelnuts were used to stretch the limited supply in a product called “Pasta Gianduja.” Ferrero founder Pietro Ferrero refined this concept into “Supercrema,” which eventually evolved into the Nutella we know today.

Traditional Nutella combines roasted hazelnuts, sugar, cocoa, and skimmed milk to achieve its signature flavor and creamy texture. Over the decades, it has become a household favorite and is widely used as a topping, filling, or baking ingredient.

What is Nutella Plant-Based?

Nutella Plant-Based is a dairy-free version of the classic spread. Instead of skimmed milk, Ferrero uses a combination of chickpeas and rice syrup to maintain its creaminess. According to early reviews, Nutella Plant-Based tastes almost identical to the original as its key ingredients – cocoa, sugar, and hazelnuts – remain the same.

Where is vegan Nutella available?

Currently, Nutella Plant-Based is available in the following countries:

 • France
 • Italy
 • Germany
 • Belgium

These countries were likely chosen due to their high demand for Nutella. For instance:

 • France consumes more Nutella than any other country, accounting for 25 percent of the world’s supply.
 • Italy, where Nutella originated, remains a devoted market, with 74 percent of Italians expressing a strong liking for the spread.

Ferrero previously stated that it aims to “meet the growing demand for plant-based products, which is fueled by an increasing number of consumers who want to reduce or avoid animal products for diet or lifestyle reasons.”

Europe is seeing a surge in dairy-free and plant-based eating. In Germany, the vegan market is thriving, with plant-based food sales increasing by 97 percent in value and 80 percent in volume between 2018 and 2020, totaling €817 million.

In France, a Ferrero survey found that one-third of people who buy chocolate products want to reduce their consumption of animal-derived foods.

When will Nutella Plant-Based come to the UK and USA?

A tub if Nutella Plant-Based next to some raspberries and blueberries on a kitchen counter
Nutella Plant-Based has received positive reviews from customers

As yet, there is no confirmed release date for Nutella Plant-Based in the UK or USA. However, it seems highly likely that it will eventually make its way to these markets.

A Ferrero spokesperson told Plant Based News that the brand plans to expand Nutella Plant-Based into other markets in the future, taking into account its performance and consumer feedback.

Currently, Nutella Plant-Based has been met mostly positive reviews from customers. In a YouTube review, Maverick Baking, for example, said that the texture and mouthfeel is “exactly the same” as the original. Another review on the website EnvieBio stated that the “creamy texture and rich, chocolatey taste were spot on.”

Some reviews, however, have expressed concern about the inclusion of palm oil in Nutella Plant-Based. Palm oil, while not unsuitable for vegans, is avoided by some plant-based eaters over its links to deforestation and wildlife destruction. Nutella uses palm oil in both its vegan and non-vegan products, meaning some people may want to avoid both.

Vegan alternatives to Nutella

If you don’t live in a country that stocks Nutella Plant-Based, or if you avoid palm oil, there are plenty of other vegan hazelnut spreads available.

In the UK, Vego offers a palm oil-free crunchy chocolate and hazelnut spread. Fabalous, Mr Organic, and Meridian also sell dairy-free and palm oil-free alternatives. If you’re in the US, you can choose from brands like Voyage Foods and Ghia.

The UK-based brand specializes in palm oil-free nut and seed butters. The new release coincides with Peanut Butter Day, which falls on Friday, January 24. The tub is available for a limited time only.

“Meridian believes doing good tastes better and that you don’t need to use palm oil to create delicious natural nut butters,” a Meridian spokesperson said in a statement. “Not only is it deliciously nutty in taste and texture, but it’s also a natural source of protein and energy. So, your household can work your way through our new 10kg tubs to your heart’s content – the perfect way to celebrate Peanut Butter Day.”

Despite what the name suggests, there is no dairy in traditional peanut butter recipes, and the vast majority of brands are suitable for vegans

Many do, however, use palm oil, which acts as an emulsifier and thickener. Palm oil is technically vegan as it isn’t animal-derived, but some vegans choose to avoid it due to the huge impact it has on the environment and wildlife

A growing number of brands, including Meridian, are distancing themselves from palm oil, as it becomes increasingly notorious among the public. Pip & Nut is another notable example of peanut butter that doesn’t include palm oil in any of its products.

You can buy the 10kg peanut butter tub from the Meridian website.

Aldi UK has announced the launch of a high-protein vegan liquid egg that can be used for scrambling, baking, and making omelettes.

The Plant Menu Plant Based Egg is suitable for cooking in the microwave, oven, and frying pan. It’s fortified with vitamins D and B12 and costs £2.49 for a 364g pack. It’s similar to other vegan liquid egg products on the market, including those from brands like Crackd and OGGS.

Aldi embraces Veganuary

The new liquid egg is one of several launches from the budget retailer this January. At the start of the month, it unveiled its largest-ever plant-based range to coincide with Veganuary, a month-long challenge that encourages people to give up animal products.

Other launches include plant-based croissants and pains au chocolat, fried pickles, fish-free smoked salmon slices, and a variety of burgers and cheeses.

Aldi Aldi UK has added a number of new products for Veganuary 2025

Veganuary is getting bigger and bigger each year as the UK’s appetite and interest in plant-based food grows,” Julie Ashfield, Aldi’s managing director of buying, said in a statement at the time. “In response to that demand, we’re continuing to expand our vegan offering, giving our shoppers plenty of choice, all at great value.”

If you want to snap up the vegan egg and other plant-based offerings, it’s best to act fast – Aldi often discontinues plant-based items after January, and it’s unclear how long stocks will last.

The updated PlantLiving range now includes items such as Smoky Chili & Rice; Vegetable Tikka Masala & Rice; Aubergine, Mushroom, & Edamame Pillows; Vietnamese Style Vegetable Pancakes; Creamy Spinach Ravioli; Spicy ‘Nduja Style Fiorelli; Rainbow Vegetable Fritters; Mushroom & Leek Sausages; No Chicken Kyiv; No Chorizo Sausages; Plant & Veg Mince; Organic Firm Tofu; Organic Marinated Tofu; Southern Fried No Chicken; Garlic-Filled Doughballs; Plant & Vegballs; and an Indian Inspired Takeaway Feast.

Waitrose helps shoppers track ‘plant points’ with new packaging

Waitrose The new-and-improved packaging shows how many plant varieties each item includes

Waitrose found that 46 percent of surveyed customers are either already trying or interested in trying to eat 30 different plant varieties per week. This is sometimes referred to as the “30 plant challenge” or “plant points,” and can help people to boost and loosely track dietary diversity.

Eighty-seven percent of Waitrose customers agreed that having the number of plant varieties on labels would help them achieve this goal, and the supermarket has now added this information to 14 items in the PlantLiving range. The Vegetable Tikka Masala & Rice, for example, contains 10 different plant varieties, while the Vegetable Pancakes contain 11.

The PlantLiving range is available from Waitrose.com, with select items also available via Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Just Eat.
